Welcome to Journalism for the 2018-2019 school year! I’m looking forward to having you in class and helping to keep our school community informed!
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This class is designed to introduce students to the many aspects of the field of journalism, as well as to produce the 2018-2019 edition of Saugatuck High School's yearbook: The Compass. We will spend time learning how to write different types of articles, sharpening our writing skills, creating two school publications: Orange You Glad You Read It and The Orange Crush, and working on the yearbook.

As a class, we will create quality work which will be published and enjoyed by our school community. If, at any time, you have concerns about your progress in class, please let me know and we will discuss what can be done in order to help you succeed.

- Have an understanding of the role of journalism in society
- Have an understanding of the mechanics of writing numerous types of articles
- Have an understanding of journalistic ethics and where the field of journalism is going
- Produce newspaper articles of publishable quality
- Produce at least two yearbook pages of publishable quality, which will appear in the 2018-2019 edition of The Compass.
EVALUATION
There are several determining factors for your grade in this class. Some examples of graded work that will be expected from you:
- Written articles
- Response to journal prompts
- Yearbook pages
- Weekly article editing and writing
- Podcasts
- Quizzes
CLASSROOM RULES
- Respectful behavior is expected at all times. This includes respect for your fellow classmates, your instructor, yourself, and the school. Treat others as you wish to be treated.
- Students will come to class prepared and with their Chromebook or other device. The devices will be used on a daily basis. As there are very few outlets in class, please make sure that they are charged.
- Inappropriate use of computers or other devices will result in an AUP violation and a referral to the office.
- Use of cell phones is prohibited in class. Your cell phone should neither be seen or heard. If it is, it will be confiscated and returned at the end of the school day.
- Citing fiction as fact is a serious offense, as is plagiarism. Students caught engaging in either of these activities will receive a zero for that assignment.
CLASS POLICIES
- The student rules and regulations laid out in the student handbook will be followed in this class.
- In the event that a student is absent, it is his/her responsibility to determine what work was missed and to make arrangements to make the work up. Please consult Schoology and email me as soon as possible at [email protected].
- Late work will be reduced by 20%. After three days, late work will be scored no higher than 50%. It is YOUR responsibility to understand deadlines.
